A very insightful and enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing your experience of what it means to live in a culture different than your own. It seems that these situations make us more aware of what is past and what is gained. As you said the arrow of time only moves one way. Most likely the same occurs if you stay in the same place your whole life, except it’s less noticeable, and so, maybe less bittersweet at times / exciting at other times

I've always been fascinated by how we would perceive things differently if other events had happened instead of "our road taken," to paraphrase the famous poem: staying vs. not staying, undergoing life-threatening difficulties vs. having a predictable existence, etc. In other words, there would be no Count of Montecristo if the innocent Edmond had not been unjustly put in jail before, and no Lost Generation writers reflecting on the US with no possibility of living on the cheap in Paris during the 1920s (thanks to a strong dollar against European currencies), etc.
